More than 1,200 pounds of marijuana seized

The Associated Press

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Officers have seized more than 1,200 pounds of marijuana valued at about $2 million at a Frankfort home.

Authorities say the undercover operation that began in Mexico ended with the arrest of 49-year-old Randy D. Kendall on Monday night. He has been charged with drug trafficking.

Kentucky State Police, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Drug Enforcement Agency launched the investigation in late January.

They followed the shipment from Mexico with surveillance over four days.

Kendall was being held Wednesday night at the Franklin County Regional Jail on $10,000 bond. His preliminary hearing in Circuit Court will be Tuesday.

God Smiles on Stoners, Eases Drought in Kentucky

February 29, 2008

For those of you who remember hearing about how the drought affecting the Southeast United States was bad for marijuana production last summer– or maybe you just, ahem, noticed– there’s been some fine developments for our very mellowed-out friends.

Many Phish fans are alleged to have smoked marijuana. Original image here.

Last summer’s drought, which will still take a period of years to overcome, happened to hit hardest 6 of the 10 most prolific producers of marijuana.

With the release of this new projection, it looks like Kentucky, West Virginia, Alabama, and Arkansas are beginning to find their way out of the woods, with Georgia and North Carolina in a state of meteorological confusion. That map also represents especially “good” news for Kentucky. The projected recovery will be strongest in the part of the state that has annually seen the most seizures by the DEA. Also know that for what it’s worth, if you’re so obsessed over this situation that you have to have real time monitoring, the USGS offers it here.

Public Defender Suspended After Drug Charges Revealed

An attorney with the Southern Oregon Public Defenders office was suspended today, after the office learned he's facing drug charges in Kentucky.

That word came in an anonymous mailing from Lexington, Kentucky, which was also sent to us here at News 10.

The mailing includes copies of the police report on the arrests of Justin Neal Rosas and his wife Mary in September of 2007, plus copies of the search warrant for their house in Lexington. Officers say they found more than 8 ounces of marijuana, marijuana plants, and suspected LSD at the home.

The case has not yet gone to trial.

The Kentucky charges came as a surprise to the head of the public defenders office in Medford, who says Rosas is suspended until more information becomes available.

The arrest happened after Rosas had passed the background checks to take the Oregon bar exam in July, 2007, but before he began work at the public defenders office later that year in December.

Marijuana charges dropped against former magistrate

The Associated Press

WARSAW, Ky. -- Charges of growing marijuana have been dropped against a longtime Gallatin County politician.

Former Gallatin County Magistrate Tom Ellis' trial was scheduled to begin Monday after investigators said they found about 100 small marijuana plants in June on property he owned.

A special prosecutor from the Kentucky Attorney General's Office assigned to try the case said last week there was not enough evidence to proceed.

Ellis and his former son-in-law, Gary Lewis, were indicted in November on charges that they were cultivating marijuana. The marijuana plants were discovered by Gallatin County sheriff's deputies called to a disturbance at Lewis' home.

Ellis resigned from his elected office in January.
